The February issue of furthernoise.org is out, where I have two reviews: Chance Reconstruction by M. Ostermeier, a post-classical artist creating unusual work with piano and electronics; and the first volume of some nice droney Soundscapes from Edward Rizo. More info and links to the artists, plus other reviews and a new compilation of exclusive live tracks, at furthernoise.org.

December at Furthernoise.org
The December 2010 issue of Furthernoise.org was published today, and it includes two of my reviews, both featuring Australian music. The first is a review of Gail Priest's Presentiments From The Spider Garden, an extended web of unanticipated exotic territories formed into a long suite. The second is an overview of the first four releases on the Melbourne label Vicmod, which together show off the possibilities of modular synths old and new.

Rieman review in furthernoise.org
The June issue of furthernoise.org has my review of Eric Glick Rieman's Trilogy from the Outside. Rieman plays a prepared electric Rhodes piano, a unique instrument that combines the electronics with mechanical noises from the original instrument, a very interesting set of music. The review has links to Rieman's site and sound samples.

Sound art in padded rooms
For the past few weeks I've been entirely occupied with putting together an audition CD for a piano camp this summer. What a grueling, miserable task, enough to drive anyone to a padded cell! I chose Ravel's Valley of the Bells, Rain Tree Sketch II by Toru Takemitsu, and Cançion y danza no. 5 by Federico Mompou, which I played in a master class last fall. If playing the three pieces to death wasn't enough, then there's sifting through multiple recordings looking for the best one. I have boundless admiration for recording artists (although maybe they don't need as many takes as I did, and maybe they have producers to do the sifting).
So my consideration of other music has been minimized, except for a review of Steve Peters' CD of sound art, Three Rooms, which was recently published at furthernoise.org. I should get back to other, more interesting topics, real soon now.

Not enough listening
I realize that I haven't reviewed as many CDs this month. I seem to be a bit unfocused in my recent listening, and, based on recent posts, I seems to have spent more time reading. I hope to rectify this situation in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I have a review of a new dark ambient work, Music for an untitled film by T. Zärkkof by the Spanish artist Lngtché over at furthernoise.org.
